Japanese Ice Cream Van.
Here is a photo of an old bus selling Ice Cream and Soft Cream. Looks kinda cool, in a broken down way, doesn't it?

Japanese Ice Cream Van
One hundred ice cream flavours
One hundred ice cream flavours.
Looking at this window of a Japanese Ice Cream shop I can see numbers to 97 but there are a few more ice creams without a number so I am guessing this place sells 100 different flavours (flavors for US friends). It is a bit hard to make out the flavours written on the card but some are Rose, Peanut, Pineapple, Wasabi and Pumpkin.
As with all the photos on this blog, you can click to get the larger version and see if you can make out any others. Write them in the comments if you do, please.

Cheese with rasberry ice cream
Cheese with rasberry ice cream.
Now I know we have cheese and fruit platters for after dinner and that's nice with a coffee but cheese with rasberries made into ice cream - umm, I don't think so.
The cheese is Fromage Blanc (well fromage is french for cheese) - it is a fresh cheese, not aged and soft a bit like thick yoghurt.
About Japan has a post about this premium ice cream from Dean and Deluca. Didn't like the strong taste or the rasberry seeds!

Soy sauce on your ice cream
Soy (soya) sauce topping.
I am not sure whether this would be nice but as some soy sauce are quite sweet (but still salty) maybe it would be OK. This soy sauce is used as a topping for your ice cream. Not sure where to buy this yet.

Squid Ink soft cream (ice cream).
A little Japanese shop selling squid ink soft cream ice cream.
You can have it just squid ink or half-half with vanilla, it actually looks preety nice mixed with the vanilla. Only 350 yen.
The little box of candy looks nice - shaped like sushi I think.

Mochi ice cream
Mochi ice cream.
Mochi ice cream is a spherical finger food varying in diameter, but comparable to a golf ball in size, shape and weight.
There are two layers: an outer mochi shell, and inner ice cream core. The flavours are dependent on brand, however matcha (ground green tea), chocolate, and vanilla are likely to be represented.

Jellyfish Ice Cream.
We have seen all types of seafood ice cream before, Crab, Clam, Eel, Fish and Octopus, but never Jellyfish.
Jellyfish Ice Cream is being sold exclusively over the Internet by Rakuten in hopes of luring the novelty crowd.
Do you like the big lumps of Jellyfish in the photo below...yum!

Fried oysters in soft serve ice cream
Fried oysters in soft serve ice cream.
This would have to be the worst looking and, I would think, the worst tasting Japanese Ice Cream ever! I can't remember the site I saw this on but it was in Japan somewhere.
Wow, two crumbed and fried oysters in soft-serve ice cream - what type of person would think of that combination and what Japanese Ice Cream shop would sell it?

Tuesday
Japanese Red Bean ice cream
Japanese Red bean ice cream (Azuki Ice Cream).
Make your own!!
1 cup dry adzuki beans
1/3 cup white sugar
2 teaspoons lemon juice
3 1/2 cups water
1 cup milk
1 cup heavy cream
4 egg yolks
2/3 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract or 1 whole vanilla BEAN. (Use a knife to scrape the inards out of a whole vanilla bean)
_________________
In a saucepan, combine the azuki beans, 1/3 cup of sugar, lemon juice and water. Bring to a boil, and boil uncovered for 3 minutes. Reduce the heat to low, and simmer for 2 1/2 to 3 hours, or until the beans are very tender. When done, the beans and liquid should amount to 3 cups. If not, add more water to compensate.
Strain the bean mixture through a sieve - I use a wooden paddle for this, and discard the bean skins. Refrigerate for about 2 hours, or until cold.
In a saucepan, combine the milk and cream. Bring to a boil over medium heat. While you wait for that to boil, whisk together the egg yolks and 2/3 cup of sugar in a medium bowl. When the cream and milk come to a boil, ladle about 1/4 cup of the hot liquid into the bowl with the egg yolks, and whisk until smooth. Pour the yolk mixture into the pan with the cream, and cook over low heat until thick enough to coat the back of a metal spoon. This should take about 5 minutes. Do not cook too long, or you will get lumps. Remove from the heat, and stir in the vanilla. Refrigerate until cold.
Once both of the mixtures are cold, stir them together. Pour into an ice cream maker, and freeze according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Vanilla Soya Bean Ice Cream
Vanilla Soya Bean Ice Cream.
The vanilla soya bean ice cream comes across as light, tasting of soya with a tinge of vanilla. It came with cut fruits which had been carefully prepared, ie. the grapes had the head cut off and the pear has its skin removed. Lovely.
I understand that this japanese ice cream is hand made by Chako herself (from Restaurant Chako).

Meat lovers ice cream
Meat lovers ice cream.
Bitchin Kitchen has an article talking about all these wierd and wonderful ice cream flavours that I have been blogging about. A nice read and great site.
What's that you say, you prefer meat to seafood? Japan has got your ice cream, meat lovers! Chicken wing aficionados dunk their drumsticks in dozens of different dips, but would they devour Chicken Wing ice cream for dessert? If the thought of that gets your goat, well, go for goat - Goat Milk ice cream, with chunks of goat meat mixed right in! Other meaty melanges include Ox Tongue and something called "Basashi"... raw horse meat. I kid you not.

Want to make Green Tea Ice Cream well here you go.
Make your own Green Tea Ice Cream:

Cherry Blossom Ice Cream
Cherry Blossom Ice Cream (Sakura Aisu).
Given the love the Japanese hold for their national emblem, this ice cream could never be anything but a dessert delight. The scrumptious sweet is yummy for the tummy, brightening up the taste buds the same way its ingredients bring about a delightful transformation across the entire country every spring. The treat may well show that Japan's ice cream makers are blossoming, but don't forget you're chomping away on flowers.

Deep Sea Water Ice Cream
Deep Sea Water (Umi no Mizu Aisu).
Brine may well rhyme with fine and shine, but this flavor offering the salt of the seas does neither. Imagine drinking some milk at the beach precisely the moment you cop a mouthful of water after a huge wave dumps on you and you've got something like this out of the ordinary taste. Not nice :(

Japanese Ice Cream Cone Pizza
Japanese Ice Cream Cone Pizza.
Kono Pizza, a fast food restaurant is offering its customers pizza in a cone.
Instead of preparing toppings on a traditional flat crust, the toppings are placed inside a cone shaped crust (think an ice cream cone) and then baked.
The reasoning behind this strange creation is that cone pizza eliminates the mess and need for silverware that traditional pizza slices require. Cone Pizza can be eaten on the run.
Kono Pizza offers customers 7 different types of pizza cones and 2 dessert cones. Pizza cones are prepared freshly and cooked on site in a specially designed conveyor belt oven.

Shark Fin Noodle Ice Cream (Fukahire Ramen Aisu).
I have to do the corny Jaws joke here.... Just when you thought it was safe ... to eat ice cream again, here's something you can really get your jaws into. The great white of ice cream!
This Japanese Ice Cream has a tangy taste of Shark Fin so definitely one for the fin-nicky fan.

Cactus and Chicken Wing Japanese Ice Cream
Todays flavours of Japanese Ice Cream
Cactus Japanese Ice Cream (Saboten Aisu).
A tasty treat that will prick the hearts of Japanese ice cream lovers everywhere. It is smooth and refreshing with a taste that must be like drawing water from a cactus after being parched in a desert for days. I hope they take out the prickles :)
Chicken Wing Japanese Ice Cream (Nagoya Tebasaki).
The taste of this ice cream is best described as foul :). It actually tastes like a fried chicken wing, which is fine if that's what you're eating, but not if you're tucking into some ice cream. I hope there are no bones. What could be worse (more next time)

Goat and Whale Japanese ice cream
This lot of lovely Japanese Ice Cream would go down a treat.
Who could resist a nice bowl of Goat Ice Cream (Yagi Aisu)...mmm, goat. I have no idea why there is also some chickens on the label maybe it has abit of beak in there as well. Made with, of course, goat's milk, but also containing plenty of the rest of the animal.
If Goat flavoured Japanese Ice Cream is not what you want, what about something from the ocean. Yep, let's have a cone of Whale Ice Cream(Kujira Aisu). Rich and creamy but full of nice hunks of flesh, this Japanese Ice Cream will still provide a whale of a time.
Whale has long been a delicacy among the Japanese. Certainly not a politically correct choice.
More Japanese Ice Cream flavours (flavors for US folk) to come...enjoy.

I will be posting more weird and wonderful Japanese Ice Cream creations soon. Enjoy.
